Clever new software brings the web to the world's blind
by Vance Fry

The WebAnywhere browser reads in a measured, monotonous voice, a bit like a robot from a science-fiction movie. But this sophisticated, new screen-reading software could open up the Internet to millions of blind people worldwide.
Screen readers for blind computer users are nothing new, but they have been expensive, costing around US$1,000. Less than one percent of the world's 38 million blind people own this kind of software. Even users who can prohibitively afford the high price often need to use the Internet when they are at public computers, where screenreading software isn't available.
